DESIGN STUDIO 2

This module introduces the principles and methods of analysis, abstraction and synthesis in design thinking that is very common in the design fields, including building and architecture. The theme of this module for this semester is "User and Context", which investigates the relationship between user and natural environment.

PROJECT 1

The first project of this module where we were required to "learn from precedents" by interpretation and exploration of solids, planes, lines and frames in architectural design. We were to focused more on the elements of architecture and architectonics that generate architectural form and space, produced by drawing and making.

Here, we were to divide in a group of six and were given an architect and his or her building to be analysed on. We were to produced architectural drawings of the given building and as well as to investigate and formulate our findings into 10 analysis diagrams and 10 diagrammatic models.

Below is my group's work and presentation board.

From this assignment, I have learnt about the architect and his works as well as to make simple diagrams and analyse his works. I am also able to understand basic architectural composition of solid, planes, lines and frames.

PROJECT 2

The second project is about designing a tea pavilion in our given site, Cameron Highlands. This project enables us to understand the concept of simple space planning requirements of a pavilion with a given space dimensions in relations to the architectural languages that we've learnt from Project 1.

Here, we were to work in a huge group to carry out site analysis of the physical context of both macro and micro level of the overall site. Next, we were to work with our partner to design a tea pavilion with a given volume. The tea pavilion shall include spaces like, drinking, preparing, relaxing, meditating and etc. The structure should corresponds to the site that we have chosen.

Below is my group's work and presentation board.

From this assignment, I have learnt to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural proposition.

PROJECT 3

The third and final project, we were required to further explore the idea of a pavilion into a more complex program. We are required to understand a user's needs and spatial requirements of a special lodging and translate them onto architectural program that includes public and private spaces for relaxing, dining, cooking, washing and etc.

Individually, we were to design a weekend lodging at our same site, Cameron Highlands. We were to explore further the relationship between architectural tectonics, function and space in architecture.

Below is my work and presentation boards.

From this assignment, I have learnt to analyse and interpret simple site context and the user needs in relation to the design of the small building.
