DESIGN STUDIO 1

This module is structured as an introduction to architectural design. This preliminary module aims to present and explains design through the expression of the perception of self and the body. Students will undergo a series of studio-based exercises and assignments that introduces the fundamental methods, principles and approaches in design thinking and basic spatial design.

PROJECT 1

The first project of this module is the ice-breaking design project which introduces basic understanding of the design processes and approaches in generating ideas, formulating conceptual narratives, developing design and translating it into from design.

Here, we are to generate ideas from a chosen Pokemon character through interests, preferences, attitudes personalities, etc. These ideas are then to be transform into an artwork. Representation of the character is to be interpreted in abstracted form.

Below is my work and presentation board.

From this assignment, I have learnt to generate design concepts through the process of exploring various sources and abstracting order and to identify key architectural design elements and principles with the ability to transform from and space.

PROJECT 2

Based on the firts project, we will continue to learn how to develop and refine conceptual narratives and storylines based on the self. We were to form a group of two to three members and to explore the dimensions of the body in a space. Each group were to produce a full scale model installation that encompasses spatial and form quality.

From this project, I have learnt to relate the idea of the individual self and the body to space and its experiential qualities.

PROJECT 3

For the final project, individually, we are required to design a space for the self by attaching it to the walls/surfaces of an "imagined" city in an empty abandoned lot in between two buildings. The space is to fit a specific use (as a dream space: for viewing, space for contemplating, space for self exploration, space for exercising, space for dreaming, space showcasing and so to speak a dream space for the user). As the user of the space, we can make our personality more interesting, an effective well thought of theme and written narrative is essential.

From this project, I have learnt to apply architectural design elements, principles and materials to create an architectural composition that demonstrates place-making. I have also learnt to utilize a process-oriented approach involving sketching and model-making as tools for generating and developing design ideas.
