DESIGN COMMUNICATION

This module introduces fundamental skills for the appropriate communication of architectural design. It engages different means of visualization and expression of space and spatial ideas through architectural drawings and modelling to prepare students with the skills required in Design projects. These skills are taught through a series of freehand, constructed drawing, and architectural modelling held both outdoors and in the studio.

PROJECT 1

A first-hand conscious experience is important in the understanding and articulation of space. This assessment introduced students to visualization and expression of space through on-site sketching activity on campus.

For the first assignment, we were to engage with the site by experiencing it through a spatial sequence of our choice. While moving in sequence, we are required to record our observation and perception of the spaces and the human habitation of these spaces through free-hand sketches. This sequence must include both exterior and interior spaces.

Through this assignment, I have learnt to develop skills in visualizing of space through observation and perception of a given site. Besides that, I have also get to understand the notion detailing's in architecture and objects.

PROJECT 2

For Project 2 of this module, it was divided into two parts; Part 1 and Part 2.The second project had introduces us to orthographic projections which we will be using a lot throughout this course.

/ PART 1/

For Project 2 // Part 1, we were given a task to include sufficient evidence to show that we are competent in a range of architectural drafting skills. We were given a furniture; studio drafting table and to provide drawings of the top view, two selected side views and at least one section of the furniture.

/ PART 2/

For Project 2 // Part 2, it was divided into three parts; Part 2A, Part 2B and part 2C. Here, we were given a selected building; Margaret Esherick House and produce orthographic drawings.

Project 2 // Part 2A started of by making a study model of the house to the scale of 1:75.

Upon finishing the model, we were required to produce a ground floor plan, four elevations, a cross-section, a longitudinal section and the site plan (smaller scale). All are of the same scale; 1:75 except the site plan.

Through this assignment, I have learnt how to demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing and identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols.

Project 2 // Part 2B we were introduce to Axonometric projections. Axonometric drawing is an excellent method of communicating and expressing an architectural idea – be it as a diagram at a fairly early stage of the design process (ie. conceptual expression) or as a presentation aid upon finalization of your design.

We were required to submit parts of the introduced building that shows the interior and some parts are exterior.

Through this assignment, I have learnt to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of an axonometric projection and to understand of what axonometric projections are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation

Project 2 // Part 2C we were introduce to perspective drawings as the mode of communication in architecture. We were required to construct firstly, one exterior (two-point) perspective followed by one sectional interior perspective (onepoint).

In constructing both these perspectives, we were to demonstrate the ability to express spatial idea in 3-D form, understanding of 2-D and 3-D relationships in architectural graphics, skills in drawing and composition, creativity and complexity of drawing

Through this assignment, I have learnt to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of one-point and two-point perspectives. I was able to of what perspectives (and its different types) are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation and finally to produce legible architectural drawings with strong creative intent.

PROJECT 3

For Project 3 of this module, it is an integration of the final project in Design Studio 1. We were to produce drawings to better inform the space of our personally designed hide out

Through this assignment, I have learnt about the ability to visually communicate ideas and own design to others clearly as well as to create a cohesive and captivating package based on my acquired skills and natural strengths
